If you're from London, Ontario and haven't heard of the Forest City Sport and Social Club yet, it's time to get in the know. Founded 15 years ago, this club has become the ultimate hub for adult recreational sports and social activities in the city. From a humble start with just 220 participants across three sports, the organization now brings together 4,600 Londoners each week, and there's no sign of it slowing down.
Dave Ward, the club's director, attributes the surge in popularity to London's booming population. But there's more to it than just numbers. The club has built a solid reputation not only for the diversity of sports it offers but also for the lifetime connections people make through its activities. Ward frequently hears from members who’ve met lifelong friends, and even spouses, on the playing field.
So what’s on the menu for sports enthusiasts this fall? The club boasts over 30 different leagues to choose from, catering to varying preferences and skill levels. Outdoor leagues such as beach volleyball, flag football, and ultimate frisbee are all set for short seven-week seasons. On the flip side, indoor leagues like badminton, dodgeball, and pickleball go the distance, lasting the entire season.
For those new to the game, the rookie leagues are perfect. Designed specifically for beginners, these leagues offer basic instruction and a chance to connect with fellow newbies. Think you've always wanted to play volleyball, basketball, curling, soccer, or floor hockey but never got around to it? Now's your chance! The fall rookie leagues are accepting new players and it’s a fantastic way to dip your toes in sport without feeling out of your depth.
This fall, the club is amping things up with some exciting new offerings. One standout addition is the cornhole league, introduced due to the rising popularity of the bag-tossing game. The fall cornhole league will feature nine weeks of play at Game Knight Leagues, a popular tabletop gaming venue in the city. Another intriguing new activity is a trampoline fitness class, offered in partnership with The Factory, an indoor entertainment center in London. Talk about jumping into fitness!
Don't miss the fall registration deadlines! If outdoor sports are your thing, you have until midnight on September 3rd to sign up. Indoor sports aficionados have a little more time, with registration closing on September 10th at midnight. Fees vary depending on the league, but all details can be found on the Forest City Sport and Social Club's official website.
Whether you're a seasoned athlete or someone just looking to get active while making new friends, the Forest City Sport and Social Club has something to offer. It's more than just about the sport—it's about building a community and having fun. So, why not give it a shot this fall? You might end up with more than just a new hobby.
