As the summer heat peaks, London Ribfest sets its sights on turning Wellington Street into a haven for meat lovers and food enthusiasts alike. This five-day feast kicks off Thursday and runs through the August civic holiday at Victoria Park, offering an array of barbecue delights, live music, and family-friendly activities.
Ribber's Row, the heart of the festival, boasts 10 top-notch barbecue vendors showcasing their expertise in pork and beef ribs, pulled pork, barbecued chicken, and more. Expect colorful setups that resemble mini-stages, inviting you to indulge in iconic dishes like baked beans, coleslaw, and corn on the cob. Don't worry if you're not a meat lover; there are more than 50 other food vendors, including halal options and vegetarian stalls offering Greek, Indian, and other diverse cuisines.
For those with kids, Ribfest has them covered. The festival features carnival rides with a $35 wristband that grants access from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The entire event operates from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., closing an hour earlier at 10 p.m. on the holiday Monday. While you enjoy your ribs, the little ones can have a blast with these fun-filled activities.
New additions this year include a second beer garden focusing on domestic ales, located near the bandshell in the park. Music lovers can revel in performances from over 20 bands, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to your Ribfest experience. Whether you're a rock-aficionado or prefer something a bit mellower, there's something for every musical taste.
But Ribfest isn't just about stuffing your face; it's also a competition. Ribbers go head-to-head for bragging rights and impressive trophies. Visitors can admire these shining accolades displayed proudly at each booth, testament to the rib masters' culinary prowess. Judging criteria vary, but the best ribs and the most flavorful sauce are hotly debated categories. New this year, a special award will also be given to non-rib vendors with the tastiest offerings.
For the conscientious eater worried about the diet, fret not. London Ribfest accommodates everyone, even vegetarians. Aside from ribs, you can gobble down salads, veggie burgers, and a plethora of other delectable plant-based options. The festival has evolved significantly since its humble beginnings in 1985, demonstrating an ability to cater to a broad audience with varied palates.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of London managed Ribfest for 20 years after taking over in 1988 but handed the reins to Family Shows Canada in 2009 due to financial constraints. The change of hands allowed the festival to thrive; now, year after year, it sees roughly 200,000 visitors enjoying 225 exhibits, 100 live bands, cooking demonstrations, and more.
With over $500,000 worth of ribs and pulled pork expected to be sold, it’s clear this is a grill master’s paradise. Prices for a full-rack rib dinner range from $25 to $35, aimed to feed two, and come with sides like coleslaw, baked beans, or mac and cheese. For a smaller appetite, half-rack options are available for $18 to $20, making it tough to resist trying out multiple vendors.
So, mark your calendars and prepare your stomachs. London Ribfest is the place to be, bringing community spirit, mouth-watering meats, and top-notch entertainment to Victoria Park. Whether you're a hardcore rib enthusiast or someone looking to enjoy a festive day out, Ribfest promises something for everyone.
