Hollywood’s beloved action star, Keanu Reeves, has taken a surprising detour from the silver screen to lace up his skates once more.
In a heartwarming twist, Reeves signed a one-day contract with the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires on August 22, 2024. Many might not know, but before dodging bullets in The Matrix, Keanu had dreams of making it big in the world of hockey.
Four decades ago, a teenage Reeves tried out for the Windsor Spitfires as a goalie. Unfortunately, an injury dashed those hopes. Fast forward to today, and that unfulfilled dream has come full circle. Reeves himself admitted he was just as excited as the team about the signing.
Keanu made quite the entrance, donning a classic Canadian tuxedo—jean jacket and jeans. The signing ceremony turned into an event to remember, with Reeves not only signing his contract but also autographing three jerseys. One of these will make its way to the Spitfires Hall of Fame, another for Reeves to keep, and the last will be auctioned off in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County Branch.
Spitfires’ general manager Bill Bowler and co-owner Brian Schwab proudly welcomed Reeves to the squad. Bowler even joked about Reeves’ goalie skills referencing his role in the 1986 film “Youngblood” where he played a hockey goalie.
The timing of this special signing wasn't coincidental. Reeves was in town with his band, Dogstar, performing at Caesars Windsor the same night. The band, consisting of guitarist-vocalist Bret Domrose, drummer Rob Mailhouse, and bassist Reeves, is touring to promote their latest album.
This unique event has not only brought joy to Keanu but also offered a great cause for the community. The auction of the signed jersey aims to raise funds to support mental health initiatives in the Windsor-Essex region.
Reeves’ story is a testament to the idea that it’s never too late to pursue a dream, leaving fans in London, ON, and beyond inspired and entertained.
