If you’ve ever wondered why the Forest City Sport and Social Club has become a local sensation in London, ON, you’re not alone. Founded 15 years ago, this club has redefined recreational sports and social activities for adults in the city.
From a modest start with only 220 participants across three sports, the club now boasts around 4,600 Londoners joining its leagues each week during the summer. Dave Ward, the club's director, attributes this growth to London’s booming population and the city's love for staying active and connected.
The magic of the club lies not just in its sporting events but in its ability to connect people. Members often share stories of forming lifelong friendships and even meeting their life partners through the club's activities. According to Ward, it's nearly impossible to count how many marriages have roots in the teams formed at the club.
The Forest City Sport and Social Club offers more than 30 sport leagues to choose from throughout the year. This fall, outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to leagues in beach volleyball, flag football, and ultimate frisbee, running for about six to seven weeks. For those who prefer indoor activities, the club has leagues in badminton, dodgeball, and the increasingly popular pickleball, lasting the entire season.
New to the game? No worries. The club’s rookie leagues are specially designed for those who have zero experience in a sport. These leagues provide instructions on the basics and offer a welcoming space for absolute beginners. This fall, rookie leagues are available for volleyball, pickleball, basketball, curling, soccer, and floor hockey.
But that’s not all! One of the exciting new additions this fall is a cornhole league, inspired by the growing enthusiasm for this laid-back, bag-tossing game. This nine-week league will take place at Game Knight Leagues, a trendy tabletop gaming venue in the city.
In partnership with The Factory, an indoor entertainment center in London, the club is also introducing a trampoline fitness class, expanding its range of fun, fitness-focused activities.
For those eager to join, the deadline for fall league registrations is fast approaching. Outdoor leagues close on September 3 at midnight, while indoor leagues have until September 10 at midnight to sign up. Fees for participation vary depending on the league.
