The Fayette Fire Department, partnering with a Toledo business, hosted a community cookout last Saturday to give away free smoke alarms and offer some family fun. This initiative comes after a devastating fire earlier this summer that killed two siblings, 18-year-old Katie Tussing and 19-year-old Tyler Tussing, and injured a third person.

The event was not only a chance to enjoy free food, a bounce house, a dunk tank, and ice cream but also a critical step towards increasing fire safety awareness in the community. A total of 200 smoke alarms were distributed, thanks to a generous donation from the Toledo-based company, Board Up.

Fire Chief Franks expressed his gratitude to Board Up for their support, emphasizing the importance of the initiative. The presence of former Toledo mayor Michael Bell, involved with Board Up, underscored the event's significance. The collaboration aimed to ensure that such a tragic incident does not repeat itself by educating the public about the life-saving importance of smoke detectors.

The lack of smoke alarms in the Tussing's home was highlighted as a critical factor in the tragic outcomes of the June 29th fire. The giveaway provided an opportunity to equip families with alarms, potentially saving lives in the future. Although dozens of alarms were left over, efforts are being made to distribute them to students and others in need.

Neighbors, still grappling with the aftermath of the fire on N. Superior St., have been visibly affected. Witnesses recounted the shocking scenes and the blood trail left by a victim who jumped from a second-story window. The community is rallying to process and cope with the loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the emotional impact on those living nearby is palpable. Neighbor Dean Carter reflects the community's sentiment, who are striving to find a way to move forward.

The Fayette Fire Department's proactive measures have gained even more importance in light of these recent tragedies. Their efforts to reach out to local schools for further distribution of smoke alarms underline their commitment to community safety.

Such events not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of unity and shared responsibility for each other's well-being. They serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and the community's role in prevention.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, demonstrating solidarity in the face of adversity. Initiatives like these highlight the critical role of local businesses and leaders in enhancing public safety.

As safety measures continue to be emphasized, it’s crucial for all residents to stay vigilant and ensure their homes are equipped with essential safety devices like smoke alarms. Together, these efforts can help build a safer, more resilient Toledo.
