Toledo is about to make history with its first-ever Black Men’s Wellness Day at Jesup W. Scott High School on Saturday, August 17th, starting bright and early at 7 a.m. Whether you’re a runner, walker, or someone looking to connect with community resources, this event is definitely worth your time.

The day kicks off with a 5K walk and run designed to get everyone moving. It’s not just about the physical activity, though. The event aims to raise awareness about the health disparities that Black men face, with free health screenings being a central component.

These screenings cover a wide range of important health metrics, such as blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, HIV, STD/STI, and prostate cancer checks. It’s a golden opportunity for men who might not see a doctor regularly to get these crucial checks done all in one place.

The African American Male Wellness Initiative, the big minds behind this event, was started in 2004 to help empower Black men through prevention and education. Over the last 20 years, it has grown to reach over 15 cities, including major hubs like Los Angeles, Houston, and Atlanta. Their work has even garnered recognition from President Obama!

One of the coolest parts of this event is that it's family-friendly and totally free! Expect vendors, live entertainment, and plenty of fun activities for everyone. It’s a day that’s not just about health but also about community and connection.

The National African American Male Wellness Initiative has made a significant impact, providing free health screenings to tens of thousands of Black men across the country. Their mantra, 'know your numbers, get moving,' emphasizes the importance of awareness and prevention. They’re making huge strides in closing the health gap between Black men and their white counterparts.

There’s a reason August is officially African American Male Wellness Month in Ohio. Events like this demonstrate a strong community commitment to health and wellness. It’s a great chance to support and be a part of something that genuinely makes a difference.

Mark your calendars for August 17th and head out to Jesup W. Scott High School at 7 a.m. for the Black Men’s Wellness Day. It’s all about saving lives, closing health gaps, and building a stronger community, one step at a time.
