The Pollyball Tournament is no ordinary volleyball event. Celebrating its 33rd edition on August 17, 2024, at the International Park courts in Toledo, OH, this annual event has become a beacon of hope and support for the local community, especially for those affected by breast cancer.
Named in memory of Polly Hylant-Tracy, who tragically passed away from breast cancer in 1990 at just 35, the tournament aims to turn her love for volleyball into a force for good. Pollyball stands out not just for its competitive spirit but also for its noble mission—to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer education and early detection.
Over the years, Pollyball has raised an impressive $2 million, which goes directly to the YWCA of Northwest Ohio’s Healthy Connections Program. This program focuses on early detection and educating under-served women about the importance of annual mammograms and self-exams. Last year alone, the program provided 471 mammograms and discovered four cases of breast cancer, showcasing the tangible impact of the funds raised.
For Polly's family, the tournament is more than just a memorial; it’s a celebration of life, community, and sustained effort against breast cancer. “It’s an important day for our family and for the community. It’s a day full of volleyball, friends, new acquaintances and people we’ve helped. It is just one of our favorite days,” shared Sarah Tracy, one of Polly’s daughters.
Sandra Hylant, Polly’s sister, also emphasizes the importance of making good out of tragic circumstances. Diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 2004 and 2018, Sandra knows firsthand the life-saving importance of early detection and wants to ensure that women in the community get the same chance. “The early detection was key for me. So we want to help educate people who are underserved in the community to know the benefit of having a mammogram every year,” she said.
The tournament isn’t just for volleyball aficionados. It’s a family-friendly event that offers a variety of activities, including food trucks, children’s activities, and fun merchandise. Even if you don’t play volleyball, there’s plenty to enjoy and participate in. More than $100,000 has already been raised for this year’s edition, highlighting the community’s unwavering support.
Major insurance companies, local businesses, and teams that have participated for years contribute to the tournament’s success. This collective effort keeps Polly’s spirit alive and ensures that her legacy helps hundreds of women every year.
Mark your calendar for August 17, 2024, and join the community at International Park for a day of volleyball, fun, and critical support for a cause that touches so many lives. Whether you’re spiking a volleyball or just enjoying a day out, Pollyball promises to be an event to remember.
