Toledo, OH, brims with rich history and vibrant celebrations, especially when it comes to its iconic port. The National Museum of the Great Lakes has brilliantly immortalized this history with its extensive Port of Toledo exhibit, segmented into three enthralling parts.
Part 1, Port of Toledo: Then, initiated in March 2020, is an immersive, virtual journey that breathes life into the port’s storied past. This digital exhibit, rolled out over six installments, invites visitors to explore interactive maps and enlightening images. Each installment dives deep into meticulously curated stories of Toledo's riverfront heritage, allowing guests to virtually hover over historical markers and uncover the tales behind every image.
Taking center stage in Part 2, this portion of the exhibit transforms into a tactile experience. Located at the History Walk Gallery in ProMedica’s downtown Toledo headquarters, this physical exhibit showcases the once bustling activities along the Maumee River. Visitors can explore various facets of the port's past, from fishing and recreation to shipbuilding and passenger safety. Although COVID-19 altered its initial accessibility, innovative video segments have since widened virtual access, featuring engaging discussions with local experts and historians.
Pivoting to the present, Part 3, Port of Toledo: Now, rounds out the exhibit. Launched in late 2020, this segment amalgamates contemporary and crowd-sourced images, reflecting the ongoing narrative of this nautical hub. Visitors can witness how the port continues to be an integral part of Toledo’s fabric, showcased through compelling visuals and stories that mirror its historic foundations.
On July 22, 2023, Toledo locals and visitors alike can dive into another dynamic facet of the port’s festive spirit. The 13th Annual Toledo Antique and Classic Boat Show, nestled within the Great Lakes Fest, offers an unparalleled day of celebration. Brought to life in collaboration with Ramsey Brothers Restorations, this event is a boat enthusiast’s dream. The festival features an array of antique and classic boats, each narrating their unique mechanical and historical saga.
The Great Lakes Fest isn't just for boat lovers—there’s plenty for everyone. From aquatic demonstrations that highlight the intricacies of watercraft handling to specialized shopping at the Marine Mart, guests are spoilt for choice. Cap off the day with delicious bites from local food trucks or join the adventurous scavenger hunt on the museum vessel.
Entry for NMGL members and kids under five is free, making it an accessible delight for families. General admission tickets are reasonably priced, ensuring that everyone can soak in the heritage and joyous atmosphere of the festival. Even if the weather decides not to cooperate, pre-sale ticket holders won’t leave empty-handed, with free museum passes awaiting them as a consolation.
Curated with care and community spirit, these events and exhibits not only preserve the port’s storied heritage but also celebrate Toledo’s vibrant cultural landscape. Whether you are a history buff, an avid boater, or someone just looking for a weekend adventure, Toledo’s port activities promise a memorable voyage into the past and present.
