Bedford Hills Golf Club

Bedford Hills Golf Club in Temperance, MI, offers something you don’t often find: three distinct 9-hole courses, each providing a different type of challenge. The Wolverine, Buckeye, and Irish courses are impeccably groomed with fairways that run well and greens that are true and fast. Yet, there’s no hiding some of the controversies surrounding this place.

Historically, the Bedford Hills Golf Club, opened in 1996, has been a staple in the local golf community. Designed by John Rutter, the 18-hole Irish/Buckeye course stretches 5941 yards with a slope rating of 115. Known for its friendly layout, the Wolverine course complements this history by adding its own unique challenges. However, a standout in terms of character and enjoyment is the Irish course, offering more nuanced play than a typical flat layout.

The GPS systems on the carts are a modern touch but come with a significant downside—they are not disability-friendly. This could be a deal breaker for some. While the driving range, practice greens, and mini-golf (newly renovated and named “BEDROCK”) offer substantial supplementary opportunities for practice, the handling of customer service leaves much to be desired.

Signature holes are scattered across the different courses, but the 9-hole Buckeye course stands out for its strategic pin placements and well-maintained fairways and greens. However, complaints about unwelcoming marshals and inconsistency in course maintenance, such as un-raked bunkers, can overshadow these highlights.

Amenities at Bedford Hills are decent. They feature a well-stocked pro shop with brands like Titleist, Callaway, and Nike, and a dining facility perfect for events like weddings and business meetings. While the staff generally receive praise for their helpfulness, the failings in customer interaction, especially from management, mar the overall experience.

When it comes to tee times, it’s advisable to book in advance since the club gets particularly busy during weekends and twilight hours. The club charges $36 for 18 holes on weekdays and $45 on weekends, with reduced rates for seniors and twilight plays.

The dress code here is quite relaxed—shirts with sleeves and dress jeans are acceptable, which is a plus for those who dislike overly formal dress policies. However, always double-check gift cards and other payment methods due to several reports of mismanagement in that area.

A few tips to enjoy your time at Bedford Hills: first, try to hit the Irish course—it offers a more enjoyable and characterful gameplay. Secondly, bring your own drinks or snacks, especially on busy days when concessions can be understaffed. Lastly, if you encounter problems with staff or service, addressing them politely and directly at the time may yield better results.
