Maumee Bay State Park Golf Course

Maumee Bay State Park Golf Course, designed by the legendary Arthur Hills, is a gem along Ohio's north coast. This 18-hole, par-72 course opened in 1991 and has since been lauded by national golf publications, not only for its Scottish-links layout but also for its affordability—thanks to its ownership by the Parks Department.

Covering 1,850 acres of protected wetlands, Maumee Bay delivers a fair yet challenging experience for golfers of all skill levels. The wide-open design is complemented by the strong coastal winds, which can turn even a casual round into a strategic battle. Water hazards and long native grasses border many holes, adding both beauty and difficulty. The greens are firm but not lightning-fast, a typical Arthur Hills trait, allowing opportunities to play the ball close to the ground and run it up to undulated greens.

A few holes stand out as particularly exceptional. The 14th hole, often acclaimed as the course's signature, poses a challenge with its twisting par and water hazards. On the front nine, holes 3, 5, and 6 are a joy to play, while on the back nine, holes 12 and 15 can make or break your scorecard. Especially beware of the 12th hole when played into the wind; it can become a real monster.

Amenities at Maumee Bay are satisfactory, offering a full-service practice facility and a clubhouse with a snack bar. However, it’s been noted that the fairway bunkers could benefit from better maintenance, as some lack rakes. Greenside bunkers, on the other hand, are well-kept. The customer service at the clubhouse has received mixed reviews, with some patrons expressing dissatisfaction with staff attitudes. This could be a consideration for those planning a longer trek to the course.

Being a part of Maumee Bay State Park means there are numerous family-friendly activities available, making it an excellent choice for a day out. Just be prepared for potentially slow play; it's a popular spot, and the pace can lag during peak times. Also, the wind can pick up significantly, so factor that into your game strategy.

Booking and tee time policies are straightforward. Reservations can be made online or by calling the Pro Shop. The course is open from April 1 through October 31, weather permitting. There isn't a strict dress code, but it's advisable to stick to typical golf attire to ensure a good experience for all.
