❤️ Toledo Review
Hotel Royal
If you're into historical vibes with a touch of modern flair, Hotel Royal in Toledo should be on your radar. This property first opened its doors in 1900, serving as a hub for railroad workers. Fast forward to 2023, and the hotel has been revived by Erin Claussen, an archaeologist who fell head-over-heels for Toledo’s architectural charm. Erin, along with Ark Restoration and Thomas Porter Architects, has worked wonders on this place, making it a blend of the old and the new.
Let's set the scene: Hotel Royal stands proudly on Broadway Street, bordered by Knapp St. and Central Union Plaza Drive. The building itself is a testament to Toledo’s rich architectural history, and it serves as a bridge between the city's storied past and its bustling present. From the outside, you’ll notice repainted masonry, new windows, and sidewalks — it’s like the building has had a face-lift! The 'Hotel Royal' sign, though a bit weathered, remains as a charming relic.
Step inside, and you'll find a small but thoughtfully arranged hotel with just five rooms available for short-term rentals. Each room offers high ceilings and large picture windows, giving you a cozy yet airy atmosphere. It's clear that attention to detail was a priority here. Erin’s use of salvaged materials, like roof joists turned into bathroom vanities and cupboards from a Van Wert, Ohio, school, is just cool. Seriously, who wouldn’t appreciate that kind of creative reuse?
Now, for the rooms themselves — think vintage vibes with modern comforts. You won’t find any cookie-cutter room designs here. Whether you're in Room 103 or Room 106, every space has its own unique elements and surprises. Prices start around $130 per night on Airbnb, which is a steal considering the prime location and the curated design.
Speaking of location, Hotel Royal is smack dab in the middle of some of Toledo’s best attractions. You’re close to the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Zoo, Museum of the Great Lakes, and over 20 Metroparks. It’s an excellent base for exploring both the city and nature. For history buffs, it’s worth noting the building once hosted Toledo’s International Hostel Guest House and was a working-class hotel for rail workers.
In terms of amenities, the hotel doesn’t disappoint despite its small size. You get free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a communal lobby area that's great for mingling or getting some work done. The rooms are available for booking through Airbnb, so it's pretty straightforward and easy to check availability and rates.
For those planning a longer stay, the second and third floors offer spacious apartments for lease. Each of these apartments is over 1,200 sq. ft, combining luxury with historic charm. Erin’s vintage home goods shop, Revival Flea, is another unique aspect of the property. Located in the commercial space on the first floor, it offers a treasure trove of antiques and quirky finds.
However, keep in mind that the hotel operates with a minimalist approach. The lobby is small, and there are no on-site dining options, so you’ll need to explore the local culinary scene — which, let’s be honest, is part of the adventure. Also, given that the hotel has recently undergone renovations, some of the finishing touches may still be in progress. But rest assured, Erin’s dedication to preserving the building’s character while adding modern amenities means your stay will likely be memorable.
