❤️ Toledo Review

Original Sub Shop & Deli

Close your eyes and imagine the perfect sub shop – now open them and find yourself at The Original Sub Shop & Deli in Toledo. Located on Broadway Street, just south of Downtown Toledo, this is Toledo's first and longest running sub shop. From its humble beginnings in 1979, founders Jackie and Sarkis David brought the submarine sandwich to the city, and they sure knew what they were doing. Fast forward to today, and Maureen Brogan continues their legacy with the same passion and a treasure trove of fresh ingredients and creativity.

Stepping inside, you're instantly greeted by a cozy, laid-back atmosphere filled with the amazing aroma of freshly baked bread. The interior boasts a charmingly unique character with lots of cool decor. The vibe here is down-to-earth and relaxed, a perfect spot for a casual lunch with friends or a quick solo bite.

Let's dive into the food, because that’s where the magic happens. The subs here are far from ordinary. Take the 'Angry Goat,' for instance – a genius combination of goat cheese, jam, and pastrami, all on some of the best bread you'll ever sink your teeth into. The bread, by the way, is from All Crumbs Artisan Bakery and is always fresh, adding that essential touch to each sub.

Their 'Original Original' sub is another standout and a crowd favorite. Packed with turkey, caramelized onion, jam, and more goat cheese, it’s simply divine. The balance of flavors is on point, and every bite feels like a little celebration.

No trip here is complete without trying their Reuben, paired perfectly with a side of their unique dill-infused potato salad (not your typical mustard-based version) or their creamy macaroni salad. Don’t forget to press your sandwich – trust me, it's worth it.

For the vegetarians out there, fear not – the 'Zen Goat' panini is a must-try. The subs are not the only stars, though. The soups here are scratch-made, and there's always a vegetarian option. Their Cream of Mushroom soup comes highly recommended for its rich and comforting flavors.

Dessert is a whole other adventure at The Original Sub Shop. Their homemade cookies are to die for. Crispy edges and a soft, melt-in-your-mouth center make these cookies a must-have with your meal. Get them fresh if you can, but be quick – they sell out fast!

The drinks menu here is just as special with an array of unique sodas like elderflower and dandelion, which beautifully complement their fresh and hearty subs. Everything here screams quality and freshness – from the scratch-made sauces to the locally sourced produce.

Thinking of a visit? A little insider tip: get there early if you don’t want to miss out, especially on weekends! This spot gets packed, and they often sell out of their beloved sub buns. They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 11AM to 3PM, and sadly closed Sundays and Mondays. Planning ahead and possibly reserving your spot via a call (419-243-4857) might save you the heartache of missing out on these stellar subs.
