Extreme Heat Strains HVAC Systems in Wichita Schools

Wichita, Kan. — The record-breaking heat is putting a tremendous strain on HVAC systems across some Wichita schools, leading to uncomfortable conditions for students and staff.

United Teachers of Wichita (UTW) is actively collaborating with the USD 259 school district to tackle the challenges posed by faulty air conditioning units. The main objective? Ensuring that classroom temperatures are kept at reasonable levels for an optimal learning environment.

Union leaders have been in close talks with the superintendent, who has reassured them that a comprehensive plan is already in motion. The goal is to keep the school environments safe and conducive to education.

UTW is going the extra mile to support teachers during these times. Mike Harris, the vice president of UTW, mentioned that they've been delivering water and refreshments to staff members who are enduring the hottest conditions in the most affected school buildings.

On the district's side, Wichita Public Schools has taken proactive measures to combat the heat. AC systems are being run throughout the night to ensure that buildings are cool by the time the school day begins.

Furthermore, the district has dedicated crews vigilantly checking each HVAC system to ensure they are functioning correctly. In situations where the heat becomes unbearable, classes will be relocated to cooler areas within the schools.
