❤️ Wichita Review

Bann Thai

Wichita's Thai food scene has a vibrant gem in Bann Thai Cafe, a cozy spot run by a dedicated owner who has been sharing her passion for authentic Thai cuisine since 2010. Tui, the owner and head chef, is known for her warm welcomes and incredible cooking skills, making Bann Thai Cafe a beloved choice for locals craving an authentic Thai dining experience. Located at 3811 West 13th Street, this small spot is perfect for both dining in and takeout, though do remember they're not open all day.

One thing to note right off the bat: if you ask for 'Thai Hot' here, be prepared. The spice level isn't just a playful threat—it's real. The highest heat level is humorously named 'In Hell,' and it truly lives up to it. If you're daring enough to order it, have a gallon of milk at the ready. The authentic flavors and bold spices are what make Bann Thai a standout, but their ability to deliver on their heat promises is truly unrivaled.

Among the many culinary delights on offer, the Pad Thai Omelette stands out as a must-try. It’s not your typical Pad Thai; imagine all the classic elements of the dish wrapped lovingly in an omelette. The combination is genius and provides a delightful twist that’s unique to Bann Thai. Another star on the menu is the Crab Rangoon. Many claim it's the best they've ever had, perfectly balanced with a creamy filling and a crisp outer shell that isn’t overly greasy.

For those who enjoy soups, the Tom Kha Gai is a revelation. This coconut milk-based chicken soup, seasoned with lemongrass, mushroom, galangal, and lime juice, is everything you could want in a comfort food. It's rich, flavorful, and has just the right hint of spice to warm you from the inside out. And if you’re in the mood for something even spicier, the Tom Yum Goong—with its hot and sour profile and fresh shrimp—is a fantastic option that’ll have you sweating by the end of the bowl.

Curry lovers are in for a treat as well. The Pa-Nang Curry, with its aromatic blend of coconut milk, red and green bell peppers, and lemon leaf, is absolutely intoxicating. The Matsaman Curry, another favorite, combines peanuts, potatoes, and onions in a savory and slightly sweet coconut milk-based sauce that’s hard to resist. Whether you prefer the earthy notes of the yellow curry or the fresh bite of the green curry, Bann Thai delivers in spades.

Their noodle and rice dishes are equally impressive. The Pad See Ew—wonderfully chewy noodles fried with egg, broccoli, and your choice of meat in a savory house sauce—is a dream. It’s both comfortingly familiar yet excitingly different with its bold flavors and expert execution. Another highlight is the Fried Rice with Crispy Pork, a dish that gets rave reviews for its texture and taste. It’s worth calling ahead to ensure they have this dish in stock because it’s a crowd favorite.

Lastly, their Chicken Chili Cashew Nut dish offers a flavorful combination of deep-fried chicken, stir-fried with carrots, onions, and bell peppers in a savory house sauce, completed with the delightful crunch of cashew nuts. It’s a vibrant, satisfying plate that’s perfect for those who appreciate the balance of savory, spicy, and sweet flavors.

If there’s any downside to Bann Thai, it's perhaps the limited hours, so plan your visit accordingly. They are typically open for lunch and dinner but closed on Sundays. Reservations are not required, but given its popularity and limited seating, it’s wise to either arrive early or opt for takeout to avoid any wait times.
